As a software engineer with a year of professional experience, I find myself at a crossroads, feeling both excited and terrified about the next steps in my career. I consider myself an above-average engineer, but I often question my ability to tackle the rigorous demands of top tech companies like Google or Microsoft. The thought of spending an entire year intensively preparing for interviews feels daunting, and I’m unsure if I’m up for it.

Currently, I work at Zoho, where I earn ₹8.4 LPA. My manager is decent, and while the deadlines can be stressful, they are generally manageable. However, the work itself is demanding. To be honest, there are days when I absolutely dread going to work. The domain I’m involved in feels niche and somewhat outdated, which adds to my frustration. Evenings are often spent too exhausted for any serious DSA (Data Structures and Algorithms) preparation, though I hold on to the belief that I can carve out time if I find enough motivation.

Recently, I received an offer from Amazon India for a Software Development Engineer (SDE) role within the Books Purchase and Payment Experience team. The offer is tempting — a base salary of ₹19.17 LPA, a signing bonus of ₹6.47 L in the first year and ₹5.18 L in the second year, plus RSUs worth ₹15.56 L (with a vesting schedule of 5%, 15%, 40%, 40%). On paper, it looks like a significant leap forward in both my career and financial stability.

However, I can’t shake off my apprehensions. I’ve read numerous reviews about Amazon’s PIP (Performance Improvement Plan) culture, which often leads to stress, continuous overtime, and weekend work. The thought of being on-call and dealing with high-pressure situations is intimidating. I wonder if I can handle this environment, especially compared to the work-life balance I currently enjoy at Zoho.

The dilemma I face is whether to prioritize comfort and stability at Zoho, where deadlines are reasonable, or to take a risk for nearly three times the salary at Amazon. I find myself stuck in this cycle of analysis paralysis, weighing the pros and cons but never arriving at a clear decision.

The reluctance to leave my comfort zone is strong, but I also know that growth often requires stepping into uncomfortable situations.

The Decision

Ultimately, my decision hinges on whether I value financial gain and career advancement over my current work-life balance. Should I take the plunge into a more challenging position at Amazon, or should I continue to develop my skills at Zoho while preparing for potentially better opportunities elsewhere?
