As a senior software engineering manager for a Fortune 100 company, I have found myself at a crossroads, grappling with the challenges of career advancement within a complex organizational structure. With a team of 34 engineers across three scrum teams, and an anticipated growth to 40 by year-end, my experience spans two decades as a developer and solutions architect. Yet, despite my passion for coaching and leading teams, I find myself seeking clarity on the next steps for growth, particularly towards director-level roles.
The Dilemma
While my company offers a plethora of training and growth opportunities, a significant gap exists in the pathway to director-level positions. Despite my proactive efforts over the past two years—collaborating with HR and my director—opportunities to gain the necessary skills and experience for these roles remain elusive. The corporate philosophy seems to favor candidates with prior experience in higher-level roles, creating a frustrating cycle that stifles ambition.
Understanding the Landscape
It’s crucial to recognize that promotions at the senior level are often dictated more by business needs than by individual capabilities. If the company requires a fixed number of directors, and if there’s no immediate need for expansion in leadership, it becomes challenging for aspiring leaders to find pathways to advancement. This restriction is not a reflection of your skills or contributions but rather a strategic decision made by the organization.
